Tess' Powers are a subset of Curupira's

Actually Tess has other powers. Remember when she turned all the skin mob
to ashes with her fireball power? The skins were about to kill all of them.

Later, she apparently use this or another power to 'vanish' the remaining 2 dupes
in New York, except pathetic Ava, who was sleeping in the Roswell alley until
Liz took her inside.

As the episodes moved on in Season 2, Tess' mindwarp ability was emphasized more
and more and was used to extricate them from several situations. It isn't surprising
that it became the focal point of the plot in the last few episodes (Hostage, Departure).

Jason Katims brought Emilie de Ravin in as a mystery alien in the last 6 episodes of
Season 1 in response to criticisms that the action was too slow and there wasn't enough
SF action.

As I recall, one critic's comments were like " Saved By the Bell - The Roswell Years".

Prior to that, she was the demon Curupira on Beastmaster. This green-clad demon
also was in about 3 more episodes that Emilie apparently made in the summer of 2000 and
were broadcast in the fall after she was already on the cast of Roswell in Season 2.

Tess' powers shown to date are a subset of  those she had while on Beastmaster as
Curupira, minus the green paint and skin-tight outfit (and backward feet).

The Curupian powers demonstrated on Beastmaster were:

- MINDWARP (or possibly shapeshifting)....she could appear as Dar's lost love, Kira. Either by shapeshifting or mindwarp.

- LIFE & DEATH KISS ... she  made the Beastmaster by putting his party parts back together
with her magic tongue.  She also killed numerous hunters with her body, sucking
death kiss that left them as empty SKINS.

(This is one origin of the possibility that she could not only acquire, but could bestow
   powers with her kiss).

- SUPERSTRENGTH/SUPERSPEED...catches spears in flight, tosses men around like
dolls, can run so fast she creates a sound like a jet in flight.

- FLAME BREATH... used it against King Zad in one of the Fall 2000 new episodes while
Emilie was on the Roswell cast. Curupira said that if she wanted to she could kill him that
way, instead of simply giving him a slightly burned face a lesson.

- ELEMENTS CONTROL... put out the fires in the forest by summoning rain. This is a power
that she apparently acquired when she killed another demon earlier, using her death kiss.

(This is one origin of the possibility that she could not only acquire, but could bestow
   powers with her kiss).

Control of the elements (weather) requires magical manipulation at the molecular level
   and possibly the atomic level.

- RESURRECTION... she resurrected some dead animals by breathing life back into them
but refused to resurrect the hunters she had killed.

- MIMICRY... she mimiced the voices of a dead hunter (this could just be a mindwarp).
                     or simply a vocal talent.

So what does Tess do when she arrives in Roswell ?

- She's with a shapeshifter.
- She does control of some elements at the molecular level by reassembling a broken object.
- She proceeds to mindwarp Max into imaginary magic kisses and clinches.
- She reached thru the wall of the library to retrieve the alien book.

- She destroys a mob of SKINS with a FIREBALL of some kind to save them all.
- She apparently vanishes the last 2 dupes (except Ava) in NYC with no
   help from Max.
- She carves the Thanksgiving turkey with a swipe of her hand.

- She eventually ensnares Max, usually via a magic kiss scenario and probably
   more mindwarping.
- She mindwarps many people across a 2 month period to create the Alex/book
   translation arc.

About the few things Tess has not demonstrated that Curupira could do is
the actual kiss of death, weather control, superspeed/strength and resurrection,
plus Curupira's ball-on-a-rope hairdo.

We never had a problem with what Tess has done on Roswell, because we mentally think
of her as the demon Curupira shapeshifted into Tess/Ava and simply doing
what comes naturally to her.... having her way.

The May 2001 season finale was pure Curupiran for Tess.

What can you expect from a demon who may or may not be a real alien?
